There are many so called “healthy bars” on the market nowadays, but actually read the ingredients list and you’ll see that they are anything but nutritious. They may be advertised as low in fat, but the taste is made up with lots of sugar and clever sugar disguises – namely fructose. If either of these are high up in the ingredients list, then probably best to avoid. Other ingredients to look out for are Hydrogentated fats (these are man made fats and recognised now as being associated with many health issues), and any artificial additives and sweeteners. Basically, if you can’t read or understand the ingredient in the list, then don’t buy it!
Here we have come up with our very own bar, which is actually nutritious and perfect for a post-workout snack.
2 cups Oats
½ Cup Vanilla Protein Powder (we like Sunwarrior Warrior Blend)
1/3 cup milled flax
1/3 cup uncooked quinoa
1/3 cup melted coconut oil
1/3 cup Peanut Butter (all natural and unsweetened is best)
1 tsp Stevia or honey/ agave to sweeten
1 tsp Vanilla extract
Mix all ingredients together in a bowl. Add about 4 tbsp water to bind all of the ingredients together. Squash down into a square baking tin and place in the fridge to set. Cut into 8 squares. Easy as that and great for an on the go post or pre workout snack.
